Volunteer Roles

Please contact us to sign up for a volunteer role. When you write to us, tell us your phone number and if you are based in the Detroit-area. Thanks!

Accessibility
Assist conference participants who are in wheelchairs or have limited mobility with getting into the dorms moving between buildings, etc.

After-party support
We are seeking volunteers to help with set-up and clean-up. We need people to fill these roles for the Friday night bowling party at the Garden Bowl, and Saturday night music event at MOCAD.

A/V support
Assist presenters in resolving any technical difficulties that arise with audio/visual equipment. We are seeking both experienced "techies" and people who want to gain experience in managing A/V equipment. We will hold a pre-AMC A/V training where you will learn how to fix problems we will encounter with laptops, projectors, adaptors and DVD players.

Childcare
Assist the Childcare provider and help with Kid's Track sessions. Watch and play with babies and kids in the childcare space, workshops, lunch caucuses and the Friday night Kids Track Slumber Party.

Documentation
Take pictures, shoot video, collect audio, interview people, share your own reflections at the conference and upload your documentation to one of the AMC harddrives.

Friendly people
Even though the AMC is like a family reunion for a lot of people, it can be overwhelming for people who are coming for the first time. The role of the "friendly people" volunteers is to greet people who look lost or confused or alienated, and make them feel welcome and comfortable and answer any questions they might have.  Friendly people should also be able to help diffuse moderately tense situations (conflict resolution skills).

Medical
Are you a doctor or do you have medical expertise? Do you have first aid skills? Let us know if you will be able to assist in the unlikely event of a medical emergency at the conference.

Promotion
Assist in the following areas: street team (distribute promotional material at local events and places); online promotion (distributing promotional material through internet channels); and local media publicity (create press releases, make contacts with local media and secure media coverage).

Registration table
This is where all the action is! Working at the registration table, you will get to see the steady stream of amazing AMC participants as they arrive, get them checked-in and answer questions.

Translation
If you speak any languages in addition to English or if you use sign language, sign up to provide one-on-one translation to conference participants.
