AMC Workshops, Panels & Film Presentations

The sessions that will make this the best AMC ever. You can see the full list of sessions here, or check them out by track or type. Keep checking back for updates.

The How-to Track

The How-to track is the heart of the AMC. Rooted in a DIY ethic, we’ve been coming together to share what we’ve got for the past 10 years. There are also a lot of hands-on activities going on throughout the conference in the Youth Media Lab. Check out all of the sessions in the How-to Track.

INCITE! Women of Color / Trans People of Color Track

Presented by INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence. The community of support we create through the INCITE! Track at the AMC is vital to our survival as women and trans people of color making media and organizing to end violence within our communities. Equally vital, is the exchange of brilliant ideas, which takes place when we come together. Check out all of the sessions in the INCITE! Women of Color / Trans People of Color Track.

Youth Media Track

If you look at all the workshops at the AMC, you’ll notice that some of the most cutting-edge strategy is coming from youth media organizations. This is exciting, considering that the future of all our movements lies in their hands. The Youth Media Track, sponsored by Detroit Summer, showcases and cultivates the leadership of youth through hands-on workshops and critical dialogue. Check out all of the sessions in the Youth Media Track.

The Youth Media Lab

The Youth Media Lab is a hotbed of hands-on skill-sharing from beat-making to transmitter-building, that stays open all weekend long in the basement of the conference center. In the YML, you’ll find video and audio editing stations, a makeshift recording studio, an experimental photo/video booth where people can do experiments with light and learn about the electromagnetic spectrum... and much, much more! The YML is youth-centered but open to all.

People's Production House Media Policy Track

The goal of the Policy Track is to upset the usual dynamic when it comes to media policy where you have a vast army of people who are willing to send emails in support of certain regulatory measures, and a select grouping of “experts” who frame the issues for legislators and lobby them to do the right thing. There is almost always a class, race, and gender division between these two classes of advocates, with the "expert" coming from a much more technologically-privileged background. The theme of this year’s policy track is the future of the Internet. Even the most reluctant media reformers will walk away with a sense that policy work is something they can (and must!) do when they go home after the conference. Check out all of the sessions in the Media Policy Track.

Media and Popular Education Track

This year instead of doing a Symposium on Popular Education prior to the conference, we’re weaving Pop Ed into every aspect of the conference. Many of the sessions at the AMC use popular education techniques, but this track includes workshops especially by and for educators who are using creative, media-based teaching methods for advancing social justice in the classroom and beyond. Check out all of the sessions in the Media and Popular Education Track.

Kids Track

Kids are welcome at the AMC! We believe it is important to introduce media techniques to children and engage them as media makers who have an important voice and point of view. Throughout the weekend there will be a mini Kid's Track of sessions happening in the childcare area, focused on how children can use several different forms of creative media as a form of protest, action and self-expression. Sessions include 'Letter Writing as Activism for Kids and Young People' and 'Kids Making Zines.'

Consumers Union presents the AMC Bowling Party

Our bowling tradition continues thanks to generous support from Consumers Union. Friday, June 20, all AMC participants get treated to a night of unlimited bowling at the Garden Bowl in the Majestic Theater Complex, a great place to unwind and get to know each other in a context where everyone is wearing funny shoes.

EMERGENCE presents the AMC Music Showcase
