Bio:
Joshua Breitbart is the Policy Director for People's Production House and a member of the Allied Media Projects board of directors.
He began his life in participatory media as a founder of Brooklyn’s Rooftop Films in 1997, now one of the largest film festivals in New York and definitely the most enjoyable. From 2000-2005, Josh helped organize the global Indymedia movement, nurturing Independent Media Centers throughout the United States, in South America, and in Africa. As a member of the NYC IMC and an editor of indymedia.org, he helped coordinate coverage of several major events, including the 2004 Republican National Convention, the worldwide antiwar protests of February 15, 2003, and September 11th. He worked with Clamor Magazine as a Consulting Editor from 2001-2004 and co-produced the Allied Media Conference from 2002-2007.
In recent years, Josh has followed his passion for community-controlled communications infrastructure into the field of Internet policy. He collaborates with other researchers and practitioners in this field through The Ethos Group. Josh writes regularly about media and technology at his blog, A Civil Defense, and for Gotham Gazette in New York City. His report on Wireless Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Story: Learning from a Municipal Wireless Pioneer, was published by The New America Foundation in February 2008.
